One of the most powerful natural appetites is the craving for water. Besides its natural significance, thirst is figuratively used of strong spiritual desire. Love this visual picture of what its like to long for thirst to be satisfied. And gazing upon Tess enjoying her brief physical satisfaction reminds of the deeper significance, our soul’s thirst for something and/or someone that lasts.
Jesus is that Living Water, offering that which will permanently satisfy our thirst.
When we feel unsatisfied with life, rather than self-medicate with worldly pursuits, recognize this dissatisfaction is pointing toward what’s called spiritual thirst. That God uses the afflictions of life to sensitize or awaken our soul-need, that the despair of the soul is brought about by experiencing the futility of anything else to satisfy the deep longings of the soul. Listen to the dissatisfaction, find comfort in CHRIST, the only reliable Living Water.
As a deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalm 42:1,2)
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. (Matthew 5:6)
